We use a scoring system (similar to hotel rankings) to classify each residence by the type of accommodation and facilities on offer. Factors include room types, communal facilities, location, setting and indicative price. This scoring is not an indicator of care quality. It relates only to accommodation and takes no account of the care quality ratings from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) which are shown separately.

Luxury ★★★★★
A luxury care home offers exceptional rooms and excellent facilities such as a cinema, bar/café, hairdressing salon, personalised service and high-end guest experiences.

Premium ★★★★
A premium care home is an upscale residence offering a wide range of facilities and rooms with full en suite bathrooms.

Deluxe ★★★
A mid-range care home offers a good level of comfort and extensive communal facilities. Rooms have at least some en suite facilities (WC and basin).

Standard ★★
A standard care home is a basic, comfortable care home offering the essentials. Most rooms do not include en suite facilities.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) uses four overall ratings to reflect a care home's performance and its adherence to standards:

Outstanding
The care home is performing exceptionally well

Good
The care home is performing well and meeting the CQC's expectations.

Requires Improvement
The care home is not performing as well as it should and the CQC has indicated how it must improve.

Inadequate
The care home is performing poorly and the CQC has taken action against it.

IMPORTANT
Only homes rated "Good" or "Outstanding" are featured on CareToCompare.

Care Fees include elements particular to each care guest that can greatly affect the final price (e.g. room selection or the amount of daily care required).
